Medieval & Encaustic Floor Tile Reproductions

We produce an ever increasing range of floor tiles based on original medieval encaustic tiles and geometric foor tile patterns. How we interpret the designs depends entirely on the unique qualities of the original tiles. We have ranges that reproduce how tiles looks now and show the wear and damage gained by several hundred years of use because that is exactly what makes the tiles so appealing. We also have ranges that reproduce how tiles would have looked when first made and ranges that take the original design and adapt them to work in contemporary settings. As a design led company we can produce bespoke tiles to match tiles no longer available or convert your ideas or designs into manufactured tiles for use in your home.

Medieval Patterned Floor Tiles - repeating designs

There is a wealth of design material in medieval tiles: patterned tiles, repeating tiles, motifs and symbols. Whilst working on reproducing the designs it is impossible, as designers, not to see the potential of the designs in a contemporary setting. For this range of tiles we have taken that potential and developed the original tile designs so that the essence of the design is kept but the scale of the designs has been altered to reflect the impact one would expect in a modern tile. Not all of the designs had repeating features at the corners so we have developed features from many sources to get repeats that are in keeping with the main design of the tile. As you would expect, a floor comprised of only patterned tiles would be overwhelming so we have also created a matching field tile to go with the main design of each range. There are many more designs in the pipeline for this range as you might expect. As a designer, once we start working on reproducing the design of an original tile, the more we work with it, the more potential we see. Developing this range is very enjoyable. These are two examples of floor tile layout shown on this page and there will be additional pages showing other tile layouts - but we could go on forever working on possible layouts.
